How to Maintain Your Garden During the Summer
The Western Cape summer is beautiful — and brutal on gardens. Long dry spells, relentless sun and the famous south-easter all take their toll. A few smart habits make all the difference.
Water deeply, not often. Short daily sprinkles encourage shallow roots. A good long soak early in the morning, a few times a week, builds resilient plants.
Mulch everything. A thick layer of mulch keeps roots cool, locks in moisture and suppresses weeds. It's the single best thing you can do in summer.
Mow high. Longer grass shades its own roots and holds water better. Raise the blade and cut less often.
Feed with care. Ease off heavy feeding in peak heat — stressed plants don't want a growth spurt they can't sustain.
Go waterwise where you can. Indigenous and drought-tolerant planting rewards you with less work and a smaller water bill.
