How to Spot Common Tree Diseases (and Treat Them)

A sick tree rarely fails overnight — it usually tells you long before. Learn the signs and you can act while there's still time.

Discoloured or wilting leaves. Out-of-season yellowing, browning or early leaf drop often points to root stress, fungus or pests.

Cankers and oozing bark. Sunken, cracked patches or weeping sap on the trunk can signal disease taking hold beneath the surface.

Fungal growth. Mushrooms or bracket fungi at the base frequently mean root or heartwood decay — a serious structural concern.

Dead branches & thinning canopy. Bare limbs high up, or a canopy that's noticeably thinner than last year, is worth investigating promptly.

What to do. Prune out affected wood cleanly, improve drainage and airflow, and remove debris. For anything advanced — or any doubt about safety — call in a professional.
